A steel-frame pool is a good compromise between an inflatable or tubular above-ground pool, which ages quickly, and a concrete pool, which is slow and expensive to build. Here is what to check to make sure it lasts.

Above ground or in-ground?

A good steel structure can do both. Above ground, installation is quicker and cheaper (no deep excavation). In-ground, it blends into the garden but requires drainage around the pool and backfilling once the pool is full. Please note: in France, a pool left in place all year round is subject to the same planning rules as an in-ground pool, even if it stands above ground.

The slab: the foundation of everything

Most problems with steel pools (warping panels, wrinkling liners) come from a poorly prepared base. Plan for a perfectly level reinforced concrete slab that extends about 30 cm beyond the pool on each side, and let it cure for several weeks before assembly. If you have any doubts about the ground (clay, backfill, slope), have a soil survey carried out.

Liner and filtration

Watertightness is provided by a made-to-measure liner, laid over an underlay that protects it from rough spots. It is maintained in the same way as any lined pool: see our liner care guide. As for filtration, a 6 to 8 m³/h unit is sufficient for pools from 3 × 2 m to 7 × 3 m, provided you run it long enough each day during the season.

Corrosion: the real issue with steel

A steel structure must be protected against rust, especially at cut edges and fixing points. Check the type of coating (galvanised, zinc-aluminium-magnesium, etc.), the thickness of the sheet steel and the fixings (stainless steel prevents rust streaks). Well-balanced water also protects metal parts.

A kit made close to home

Our company also offers an above-ground steel pool, which can also be installed in-ground, made in the Gers: 3 mm sheet steel, sizes to the nearest metre, and a complete kit with liner, filtration and ladder. Delivery to mainland France only (excluding islands). And to maintain your pool, Piscine SAV stocks spare parts for filtration systems, skimmers and return inlets.

To judge how sturdy a structure really is, nothing beats a real-life test: here is the strength test of this kit, with the pool full and put under strain by a mechanical digger (16 March 2026).
